Two Dimes and a Nickel
Regarding Two Dimes and a Nickel- County Sales Reveiw
This fine Bluegrass artist from Alabama continues to put out first class traditional music with a hard-core, Monroe flavor. Over the years he has developed a style and a confidence that is impressive, choosing interesting material and presenting it in a dynamic way that grabs the listener, whether in person or through his recordings. This, his 3rd album for Rebel, is another fine assemblage of songs, most of them new to the genre. BROKEN PROMISE, THE BRAMBLES, BRIARS, & ME, HARD TIMES, BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN SKIES, TRAIN THAT CARRIED MY GIRL FROM TOWN, etc
Troubled Times
Regarding Troubled Times CD, County Sales Reveiw
Alabaman Davis continues an outstanding career in Bluegrass music with this, his second album for Rebel. It’s hard-edged traditional fare, featuring Davis’ authoritative vocals and his bluesy, Monroe influenced mandolin work, backed up perfectly by a tight band that includes good fiddling by Owen Saunders and the excellent harmony vocals of Marty Hays. The theme of most of the well-chosen songs here is songs with a story, such as Damon Black’s fine JAKE SATTERFIELD, CHANCELLORSVILLE (a Civil War tale), and 3 good songs by Alan Johnston, BALLAD OF SARAH MALONE, THE RIVER RAN BLACK and MUDDY WATER. A surprise is a great version of the neat old Charlie Poole song, MILWAUKEE BLUES. And Davis’ instrumental EVENING PRAYER BLUES is right on the money. Lots to recommend this superb recording by a great artist!
