It seems we’ve been all around the world, lately! Alot of travelling, shows, super fun times!, starting in Morristown, Nova Scotia at a great festival, Hartford,CT. at The Firebox, Hiltons,VA. at the Carter Fold, a private event in White Plains, N.Y. with Country Man Dan Henderson (sooo much fun), walked in N.Y. City that nite (my first time), Thomas, WV., Manchester, MD. at the Fireman’s carnival, Derby, IN. and Hopedale, OH. at Mickey’s Mountain. All in 2 weeks, much too fast !! Oh yea, there’;s was a breakdown in the mix!! Not instrumental, sad to say. But we made all the shows, thankfully!! Just a quick sketch, each one of these dates was a story in itself!! A BIG hello to everybody we saw and visited with on this series of trips, it was great seeing you!!
Wisconsin to Chicago to Iowa City!!
We had a great 4 stop jaunt starting in Two Rivers, Winconsin on Thursday April 29th. The show was at Two Rivers High School, promoted by our old friend Brad Klabunde. Brad works harder than anybody to get a great crowd out for the groups.Once again, Brad hit it out of the park, the Thursday crowd was large and very appreciative. We got in fairly early on the 29th, Brad went up a couple days early and palled around with Brad seeing the sites. They got to see the Brewers on Wednesday and a fishing trip to boot. The brats and smelts are always good in Wisconsin… and the cheese!
Friday was an easy ride to Madison, for a fun show at the Harmony! Met some new folks there as well as visiting with an old friend, Spiter Vetter. Spiter had booked us at the Chicago Folk Festival a few years ago.
Got a good nites sleep in Madison, then headed over to Evanston, IL. for a Packed show for Chip Covington and Mike Miller. The crowd is always great in Evanston. Got a chance to visit with alot of friends we’ve met over the last few years, including Chip and family, Mike and Coleen Miller, John and Ellen Wright and Nelson Mandrell. Pulled out semi-late and drove most of the nite getting to Iowa City for a 2pm show at the Mill. The crowd was a super Sunday crowd! Met alot of new friends, alot of Brad’s and Lindsey’s friends.
Thanks to all who came out to the shows, we hope you had as much fun as we did!!
We are having a smoked sausage and dairy good time in WI! Today before we head to Madison we have a mission, Robert Montgomery has to find some Smelt! It is a small fish that is captured in the spring in lake Michigan that they fry and eat whole. Robert ate them 3 yrs. ago and is determined to get some more!, unfortuneatly they are not running in the streams untill later? We don’t know but Wiki. has a lot of info on it. We have had a great time so far, now we have to head out on our quest for SMELT!

David Davis Inducted into Alabama Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame
Alabama Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame inducts bluegrass star David Davis.
Davis and his Warrior River Boys continue to be among the top recording artists in their industry. Their latest Rebel Records CD “Two Dimes And A Nickel” is number 11 on the March Cashbox Top Bluegrass Albums chart.
The Cullman, Ala. native has led the Warrior River Boys for 26 years forging a unique place for his artistic flair. He has appeared live for over two million people in 45 states, all Canadian provinces, and even the Bahamas. The group itself actually continues a 40-year musical legacy.
“I am tremendously honored to be included among these talented honorees,” Davis said. “I accept this honor on behalf of so many great players and singers who came through the band in last 26 years from Alabama and other states.”
He credited his early musical opportunities to the influences of his late father Leddell Davis, his grandfather J.H. Bailey and all his family including his Uncle Cleo Davis, who was Bill Monroe’s first Blue Grass Boy.
Davis also thanked the late honoree Garry Thurmond for giving him his start in professional music.
“Being accepted by your peers and friends is something we work hard for and it is appreciated,” he said.
Other inductees were Herb Trotman, Ginger Boatwright, the Brasher Brothers, and the late guitarist Garry Thurmond, formerly of the Flint River Boys and Warrior River Boys.
Davis attended the Alabama Bluegrass Music Association event March 19 at Bessemer, Ala. with his wife Cindy, mother Lucille Davis, aunt Avnell Nail and friend Mack Dunlap.
He said that he is extremely proud of his Alabama musical roots drawing upon the heritage of other Alabamians including Hank Williams and the Louvin Brothers to fuel his creativeness.
“For the last three albums, I have been making a conscious effort to create music that will appeal to all ages while remaining the most traditional sound out there,” he said. “I have been working to find the right balance between the traditional sound that we are respected for preserving while creating music that will cross all music genres.”
Currently his group includes Marty Hays playing bass, Owen Saunders playing fiddle, Robert Montgomery on banjo and Brad Folk on guitar.
Davis said Bill Monroe was innovative for his time, and he is working to bring a new approach to the tradition for today.
“We are continuing to find that needle in the haystack to create a style with the traditional roots that will be accepted by today’s audiences,” he said.

Super Fun Weekend
The Warrior River Boys had a ton of fun this weekend hanging around the St. Louis area. We played at KDHX for an hour, thanks to their staff, they were great. Then it was over to the Focal Point to play a old theater to a full house. Best of all they bought us supper at the Maya Cafe, the best resturant ever, Aztec food, lots of new flavors, like coffee in their pork, raisins and cinnamon in their chicken. What at treat.
The next day David ran off to an Auction, Robert was with his girlfriend, Marty was with his family, so me and Owen packed the fishing poles, picked up the New Belgium St. Louis Beer Ranger Joel Winn and headed out to see our friend Chris Wiseman on the Mississippi River. Chris and his buddy live on the river on house boats, and they love to fish, and play bluegrass. Me and Owen hung into the early evening and headed back to the room. David loaded the van again with assorted stuff from the auction, never heard what Robert was up to.
Sunday was great, the Edgewood Opry, what a place, beutiful Opry house filled to the brim with friends and family, what great people!! The Warrior River Boys had these guests at the show that day- The Possom Trotters, Matthew Besher, Bill Anderson, Leroy VanDyke, Willie Nelson, Hank Snow, and Elvis !!! What a memorable show.
Monday was down to the sleepy town of Paragould, Arkansas. Big room, they had a bluegrass pick before the show and a fully catered meal for everyone. The show was officially free but they passed the hat for donations and really put out for the band, I love bluegrass fans. Thanks for all those there and we will see you next year.
Dont forget to post your comments here, just click on comment, right there on the top of the post. We would love to here from everyone. Thanks, and see you soon, DD@WRB
